Bristol Greatest Hits Radio (Bristol Express News) September 25, 2026 – As reported by Katy White of Greatest Hits Radio (Bristol & The South West), a man has been sentenced to seven years and six months behind bars after being convicted of causing grievous bodily harm to a woman and breaching a restraining order.

Johnathan Harvey, 34, of Albany Road, Redruth, in Cornwall, was sentenced at Bristol Crown Court on Friday, 18th September, having been convicted by a jury in July.

The court heard that Harvey had breached an earlier court order by contacting the woman and persuading her to restart a relationship with him. The woman soon became concerned about his behaviour. In October 2025, Harvey attacked the woman with a hammer at her home in Bristol. He struck her on the head before fleeing the scene.

The woman managed to run to a neighbour’s house, and emergency services were called. She needed hospital treatment for her injuries.

What Did the Victim Say in Her Impact Statement?

In an impact statement detailed by Katy White of Greatest Hits Radio (Bristol & The South West), the 34-year-old woman stated:

“Johnathan Harvey continues to change my life in ways I never thought possible. There are days when I feel like a shell of the person I used to be, afraid to leave my house, experiencing panic attacks. I struggle with nightmares and continue to live with the weight of everything that happened that night.”

What Was the Police Response to the Sentencing?

As reported by Katy White of Greatest Hits Radio (Bristol & The South West), Acting Detective Sergeant Matt Morris, the officer in the case, stated:

“I believe that Johnathan Harvey poses a significant danger to women with whom he forms intimate relationships.”

Acting Detective Sergeant Matt Morris also stated that:

“The survivor demonstrated exceptional bravery throughout this investigation and trial. Her courage and determination have been instrumental in securing this conviction, and I would like to thank her for the support and commitment she has shown throughout the criminal justice process.”

Furthermore, as noted by Katy White of Greatest Hits Radio (Bristol & The South West), Acting Detective Sergeant Matt Morris added:

“The sentence imposed by the court reflects the seriousness of his offending and the risk he continues to present, with the judge determining that Harvey met the criteria of a dangerous offender. Tackling violence against women and girls is a policing priority, and we remain committed to identifying, investigating and bringing offenders to justice. I hope the outcome of this case gives other victims the confidence to come forward, knowing they will be listened to, supported and taken seriously.”

Background of the Particular Development

This sentencing stems from an escalating cycle of domestic abuse and the direct violation of legal safeguards designed to protect vulnerable individuals. Restraining orders are legally binding measures issued by courts to prevent perpetrators from contacting victims. In this case, Johnathan Harvey exploited contact to re-establish a relationship, which culminated in severe physical violence when the victim grew concerned about his behaviour. The judicial finding that Harvey meets the criteria of a dangerous offender reflects heightened institutional focus across the United Kingdom’s criminal justice system on repeat domestic offenders and safeguarding victims of gender-based violence.

This legal outcome reinforces institutional priorities regarding violence against women and girls, directly impacting public safety and victim support networks. For domestic abuse survivors and vulnerable members of the public, the swift conviction and substantial custodial sentence signal that judicial and police bodies are treating breaches of restraining orders and domestic assaults with severe penal consequences.

For potential offenders, this ruling acts as a strong deterrent, underlining that courts will enforce dangerous offender classifications. For the wider community and local support agencies, cases like this highlight the critical importance of reporting breaches early, potentially encouraging more victims to seek help while emphasizing the ongoing resource demands placed on local policing and NHS services in Bristol and the South West.
