Key Points

  • Members of the music elite in Bristol teamed up with young people from south Bristol to produce a new song “Same Old Story”.
  • Among the participants in the project are Geoff Barrow (Portishead), post-punk musician Billy Nomates, IDLES bass player Adam Devonshire, jungle DJ Dazee and Jason from The Cause Bristol.
  • The song marks the opening of the modern 12 million pound youth center in south Bristol called 224 Youth Zone.
  • The youths, Kaycie (16), Tia (15) and Hannad (20) recorded their part in the song in two sessions in Geoff Barrow’s Invada Studios in Bedminster, creating lyrics and vocals.
  • As Geoff Barrow said, the role of youth clubs was crucial in his career development because the club he visited helped him to find a job in a youth training scheme after finishing high school without qualifications and with an undiagnosed dyslexia.
  • Adam Devonshire (IDLES bass player) claimed that the project shows the main idea of the Youth Zone: to open the doors for those who could not have access before.

Bristol (Bristol Express News) September 25, 2026 – Some of Bristol’s most prominent musical figures have joined forces with local youth groups from the south of the city to record a brand-new track celebrating new beginnings and community growth.

As reported by Milan Perera of Bristol24/7, the collaborative track is titled “Same Old Story” and serves as a celebration of the opening of the state-of-the-art 12 million pound youth centre, 224 Youth Zone, located in south Bristol. The creative project directly involves young people from the area who contributed extensively to the song’s lyrics and vocal delivery.

Who Contributed To The “Same Old Story” Project?

The initiative brought together an impressive roster of local talent. As detailed by Milan Perera of Bristol24/7, the contributors include Portishead co-founder Geoff Barrow, post-punk artist Billy Nomates (Tor Maries), jungle producer DJ Dazee, IDLES bassist Adam Devonshire, and Jason from The Cause Bristol.

Young participants Kaycie, 16, Tia, 15, and Hannad, 20, took part in two intensive recording sessions to develop the lyrics and work on the final recording. Tor Maries worked closely with teenage participants Tia and Kaycie to help turn their musical ideas into a finished song. True to its local geographical origins, the track features a distinct drum and bass feel complemented by hypnotic vocals.

Why Is Geoff Barrow Supporting The New Youth Zone?

Portishead, a band that has sold more than eight million albums worldwide with success on both sides of the Atlantic, brought heavy industry weight to the community project. Geoff Barrow, who serves as an ambassador for the new centre, stated that his own personal experience of youth clubs played a crucial role in shaping his professional career.

As reported by Milan Perera of Bristol24/7, Geoff Barrow explained how he used to DJ and rehearse with his band at his local youth club as a teenager. Geoff Barrow stated that:

“After I left school with no qualifications, it was the woman who ran the club who got me onto a youth training scheme in a music studio. Without the youth club, and her belief in me, I would never have had the career I’ve had.”

Geoff Barrow added that he had a difficult time at school because his dyslexia was not diagnosed until after he left, noting that he could not read and initially thought he was stupid. He explained that at the youth club, he felt safe, understood, and able to confide in youth workers who gave him time.

“Sometimes young people need someone to talk to who isn’t part of their family or the school system, someone they can trust, who’s trained to spot problems,” Geoff Barrow told Bristol24/7.

Furthermore, Geoff Barrow noted that 224 Youth Zone will give young people opportunities to explore various activities, including music, podcasting, basketball, art, and design. Since the facility opened, music has quickly become one of the busiest areas, with its dedicated music room and recording studio seeing regular use.

What Impact Is 224 Youth Zone Having On Local Youths?

Echoing these sentiments, IDLES bassist Adam Devonshire spoke about the wider implications of the facility. As reported by Milan Perera of Bristol24/7, Adam Devonshire stated that the project reflected exactly what the new Youth Zone is intended to do: open doors that might otherwise stay closed.

The youth centre offers more than 20 different activities to young people, ranging from 3D printing and coding to professional creative and career opportunities. Members of the public can listen to the finished track, “Same Old Story,” via SoundCloud on the official 224 Collective page.

Background Of The Development

The release of “Same Old Story” follows the grand opening of the 12 million pound 224 Youth Zone in south Bristol, which officially opened its doors in June. Designed to bridge social and economic gaps for young people in the region, the facility provides comprehensive support infrastructure, vocational training, and recreational activities. Youth zones of this scale are part of a broader push to revitalise community engagement, offering safe spaces equipped with modern technology, recording studios, and mentorship programmes to combat rising youth disenfranchisement and educational hurdles in urban areas.

How This Development Can Affect Young People In South Bristol

The collaboration between high-profile local musicians and the 224 Youth Zone is expected to significantly boost youth engagement and self-esteem among teenagers in south Bristol. By providing direct access to world-class mentors like Geoff Barrow, Billy Nomates, and Adam Devonshire, the initiative demystifies creative industries, making careers in music and the arts feel attainable for working-class youths. Furthermore, as the music studio and digital workshops remain heavily utilised, this infrastructure will likely foster greater mental health support, skill acquisition, and community cohesion, ultimately steering young people toward constructive professional pathways and long-term personal success.
