As reported by Martin Booth of Bristol24/7, the initial rally was called on Friday by the group Bristol Rises, whose promotional poster demanded “antifa scum off our streets”. According to the reporting, a lone demonstrator waving a St George’s flag was seen in the middle of College Green around 6:45 pm, before approximately 50 supporters accompanied by police arrived from the direction of Central Library shortly before 7:00 pm.

The rally attracted a substantial counter-demonstration of more than 300 people, who gathered on the opposite side of College Green. As reported by Martin Booth of Bristol24/7, both groups chanted across the green for around an hour while police officers remained positioned between them to prevent direct physical clashes.

How Did the Demonstrators and Police Interact on the Ground?

The situation on College Green involved dynamic exchanges between both factions and law enforcement. As reported by Martin Booth of Bristol24/7, members of the Bristol Rises group broadcast drum’n’bass music from a loudspeaker, with one individual holding a Manchester City flag and another using a megaphone to voice complaints about “two-tier policing”. Martin Booth noted that the individual on the megaphone shouted, “Come over to the righteous side!” towards the opposing crowd.

On the counter-protest side, the larger crowd of over 300 individuals drowned out the speaker system. According to Martin Booth of Bristol24/7, popular chants from the counter-demonstration included “Can you hear the fascists sing?” and “Bristol is antifascist”, alongside general chants of “Whose streets? Our streets!” exchanged by both sides. Visual evidence captured by photographer Rob Browne of Bristol24/7 showed counter-protesters holding banners displaying messages such as “Be nice” and “Fascist scum off our streets”.

Police action was required at several points during the evening. As reported by Martin Booth of Bristol24/7, police officers on horseback intervened to prevent masked anti-fascist demonstrators from moving towards the Bristol Rises rally, with one officer directly instructing individuals to remove their face coverings.

Following the containment of the crowds, police confirmed two arrests. As reported by Martin Booth of Bristol24/7, one person was taken into custody on suspicion of wearing a face mask, while a second man was arrested on suspicion of assault relating to an incident that police stated had occurred several days prior.

What Impact Did the Protest Have on Local Events?

The political gatherings led to immediate disruptions in the surrounding civic area. As reported by Martin Booth of Bristol24/7, the scheduled Shine Night Walk had to be postponed as a direct result of the safety precautions and police deployment on College Green.

However, non-related public activities in the immediate vicinity continued where possible. Martin Booth of Bristol24/7 observed that a group of people gathered near Bristol Cathedral to begin a ghost-themed walking tour despite the ongoing noise and police presence nearby.

Background of the Particular Development

Public gatherings and counter-demonstrations on College Green reflect ongoing tensions between right-wing activist groups and anti-fascist movements within Bristol. College Green, located directly in front of City Hall and adjacent to Bristol Cathedral, has long served as a prominent focal point for civic assemblies, political speeches, and public demonstrations in the city.

In recent years, law enforcement across the United Kingdom has faced increased pressure when managing public order during counter-demonstrations. The deployment of mounted police units and the enforcement of regulations regarding face coverings have become standard tactical measures utilised by Avon and Somerset Police to prevent direct confrontations between opposing factions and to ensure public safety in high-density urban areas.

How This Development Can Affect Local Communities and Public Events

This development is likely to influence how local authorities, event organisers, and residents navigate future public gatherings in central Bristol:

  • Impact on Event Planning: Event organizers utilizing public spaces near College Green may face heightened security scrutiny, potential postponements, or increased insurance costs when scheduling community events that overlap with planned political rallies.
  • Increased Policing Measures: Avon and Somerset Police are likely to maintain strict public order strategies, including preemptive conditions on marches and stricter enforcement of rules regarding face coverings, to minimize risk during potential future demonstrations.
  • Community Relations: Tensions between opposing ideological groups in the city may prompt local council leaders and community organisations to engage in public safety dialogues to balance freedom of assembly with the prevention of local business and event disruption.
